I Just Need To Research More (The Education Myth)

Jordan Smith

The Research Trap That's Keeping You Out Of Shape

"I just need to do a bit more research first."

A 52-year-old CEO told me this last month.

So I pulled out my phone and asked him to Google something:

"Alright, type in 'best way to lose fat for men over 50'"

He did.

"How many results?"

"About 47 million."

"Now search 'executive fitness program'"

"23 million."

"One more - 'how to get in shape with no time'"

"38 million."

"Right. So how much more research do you need?"

He laughed nervously. "I guess... I just want to make sure I pick the right approach."

Here's What I Told Him

Mate, you're not researching. You're procrastinating.

You know why?

Because "more research" feels productive without requiring any actual change.

You can read 500 articles about protein intake.
You can watch 100 YouTube videos about training splits.
You can download every macro calculator on the internet.

And you'll STILL be exactly where you are now.

Because information without execution is just entertainment.

The Business Leader Paradox

You're a CEO. You make million-dollar decisions with 70% of the information.

You don't wait until you've read every business book before you make a hire.
You don't research for 6 months before you close a deal.
You don't need "all the facts" before you pivot strategy.

So why do you need a PhD in exercise science before you start training 3x a week?

The Truth About Information Overload

You don't need more information.

You've probably consumed more fitness content than most personal trainers.

What you need is:

  • A clear plan (that actually fits your life)
  • Someone who stops you second-guessing every decision
  • Accountability when you want to bail and "research more options"

The Real Cost Of Research Paralysis

That CEO I mentioned?

He'd spent 2 years "researching the best approach."

Meanwhile:

  • He gained another 7kg
  • His sleep got worse
  • His energy tanked
  • His confidence dropped

Two years of reading. Zero years of results.

What Actually Happened When He Stopped Researching

He stopped researching 8 weeks ago.

Started training. Started eating better.

He's down 9kg and just told me: "I can't believe I wasted 2 years reading shit instead of just doing shit."

How To Break The Research Cycle

Step 1: Acknowledge The Truth

You're not lacking information. You're lacking decision.

Step 2: Accept "Good Enough"

The best program is the one you'll actually follow.

Step 3: Commit To 12 Weeks

Pick an approach. ANY approach that:

  • Fits your schedule (realistically)
  • Includes strength training
  • Prioritizes protein
  • Doesn't require perfection

Then stop researching for 12 weeks.

The Bottom Line

I'm opening 10 spots next week for executives who are ready to stop studying fitness like a university course and start executing like the leaders they are.
